You will become Confident and Knowledgeable about Herb Plants!
Technique #1: Start Simple
Pick ONE herb from your back yard. Can be one you have planted, or even easier, one growing wild.
Yes! You do have herbs growing wild in your yard. You just do not yet recognize them for what they really are! You probably think of them as noxious weeds!
An elderly herbalist gave me the best definition for a weed I have ever heard.
She defined a weed as: A plant whose use is not yet known to you!
Any of these sound familiar? I bet you can identify at least a couple by sight all ready. If you are unsure about what it looks like, click on each link to take a look!
All abundantly available in everyone's yard or garden and all extremely valuable!
Made your choice? (Remember, start with just one!)
Great! Go on to the next step.
Technique #2: Stay Simple
Learn ALL you can about the ONE herb you have chosen.
- How to identify your herb in all stages of its life cycle
- The plant's "anatomy" (botanical parts)
- What parts to harvest
- When to harvest
- Uses: culinary and/or medicinal
- How to preserve
- How to propagate and cultivate
- Etc.
Technique #3: Keep It Simple
Keep it simple by keeping a journal. Nothing complicated, just a way to keep all the new-found knowledge about your herb organized.
Keeping new info organized in a notebook or file, keeps it organized in your brain too!
Organize your info in a:
- Card file
- Notebook or Scrapbook
- Computerized document
- Any form that is easy and fun for you!
The proper term for an herbal journal is an Herbarium. Technically an herbarium includes dried specimens of the actual plant that have been pressed and glued to a mat board.
Unfortunately, preserving these for any length of time is often difficult. A good picture or two that helps jog your memory is usually just as effective.
Apply these techniques as you learn about herb plants, and it's easy!
