Blackberry Pictures

Easily Identify Blackberries in all Seasons and
in Every Stage of its Life Cycle!

These blackberry pictures include several species in this large plant family that reside on our property. Since the Blackberry and Dewberry species are so numerous (over 200 species in the United States alone!), and their differences minute and technical, I will not attempt to distinguish between them! Let's leave the technicalities to the botanists!

For our purposes, their similarities are so great that it is easy to lump them all together. The leaves, roots and fruits of the Rubus Family can all be used in the same way, so it really doesn't matter which one you find. You can freely enjoy them all!

Note: There are no poisonous look-alikes either, so you can harvest with no worries!

These pictures begin with the early spring shoots, and end with the final juicy berries well know by us all!

Blackberry Pictures: young spring shoot

Young spring shoot:
Just a few inches tall, with immature thorns like soft hairs, this shoot can be peeled and cut up to make a delicious addition to your salad!

Blackberry Pictures: Flower buds

Buds:
When the buds begin to form, and before they open, is the time to harvest and dry the leaves.

Depending on the weather,
you will have a 1 to 2 week
window in which to do this.

Blackberry Pictures: beautiful blooms

Blackberry blossoms:
What a gorgeous addition to the spring landscape the blackberry blossoms make!

This is a good time to stake out your berry patch. By mid-July, other plants will grow up around them making the ripe fruit harder to spot.

Blackberry Pictures: Setting fruit

Setting fruit:
If you've been a little unsure in identifying your blackberry plants, when the fruit begins to set, you'll know absolutely that you have found blackberries!

Blackberry Pictures:Unripe fruit

Unripe fruit:
I know these berries look good enough to eat, but unless they are the rather rare wild red raspberries, the taste will be mouth-puckeringly (is that a word?!?) sour!

Blackberry Pictures: Ripe fruit

Ripe fruit:
Ready to pick, these delicious berries can be used in any berry recipe you have.

They also have many therapeutic benefits you will want to learn about. Their delicious taste makes them an easy remedy for anyone to take, even children!

I hope these Blackberry pictures have given you the confidence you need to easily identify this herb. Once you recognize it, and have found it for yourself, I know you will want to learn more about it!
