Where do you begin?
If you take the plunge, and buy what looks like an informative book, or spend hours researching on the net, often disappointment is the result. Many books assume you are already well versed in plant lore, and most sites are either big sales pitches for their products or written for the experienced herbalist!
Let's say you want to identify a specific seedling in the wild. The pictures and drawings available are often....Ugh! Many times they are taken at too great a distance, or surrounded by too many other "green things". How do you tell what is what?
But, even if you do find a good photo, it usually shows only the flower. Often none of the plant is showing, not even the tip of a leaf. Not very useful if you want to harvest the tender greens before the buds open!
And what about how the plant looks in different seasons? What a disappointment to discover I had dug up some really important herbs when I thought I was just "weeding" my garden!
Then comes the trade language. You have to be a botanist to understand the descriptions!
And if you want to know the medicinal uses, forget it! Carminative, purgative, emmenagogue, herpetic, sialagogue...
